It was made for hardcore enthusiasts who wanted to either help fund the development of games that wouldn't otherwise be made and/or help its technical development. Customers should be buying your game based on its current state, not on promises of a future that may or may not be realized.”Įarly Access was never intended to sell millions of copies. This is the game telling consumers, "This game is not in a finished state."Īs the guidelines for EA state, from Valve, "Do not ask your customers to bet on the future of your game. Unless if it labels itself as an Early Access game, then people shut up and accept it.Įarly Access is a system on Steam for games that knowingly release their product, for money, in an unfinished state due to their development. They were finished products, and if a product is broken or bad, people will speak their mind. None of those titles were early access games. People judged these games for what they had and not what they promised.

People were rightfully upset at all of these instances of games that were either not polished for a full-release state nor full of content that would have been better if it was made first. Star Wars: Battlefront (2015) was barren of content, unbalanced, and people were rightfully upset about a season's pass of promises and junk (emotes-they're selling you animations). Batman: Arkham Knight is also a game that was broken on PC's release. Nor where triple-A bug fests can now be called Early Access titles.Ĭall of Duty Black Ops 3 was a finished game broken on release. I don't know where people have gotten the idea that Early Access is just a label. Shoddy Full-Price Games ARE NOT Early Access Games And it's not just because I don't trust the developers, I don't trust consumers to call this bullshit out because they're "indie". I do not trust developers to manage their development time with alternative revenues for their UNFINISHED game (DLC).

I am against the idea of microtransactions on Early Access solely because that idea is a dodgy practice for an already abused system. Nor do I care that the new guns can be unlocked when you play, and they, supposedly, do not alter the game's balance by being provided to others (which was something KF 1 abused at times.) I do not care that these are mostly cosmetics, which have more than artists' development time put in to set up the marketplace crate system like with TF2 and CS:GO. If you are not aware, I ask that you read this article which goes into full details of Killing Floor 2's implementation for micro-transactions. You know exactly what it is that brought both matters up. Most likely I have played all the games I am talking about-why else would I choose them as an example? I only think I should make one disclaimer: Any games that I will bring up may not be games I have played. I am focused on a specific topic, and I'll explain why I dislike certain aspects that are becoming popular. What is this series? I get cynical, sometimes, at trends in games that make me feel like a relic. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut Schrodinger's Cat & The Raiders of the Lost Quark

This is simply an archive if anyone is ever interested. Only reviews that I have extended thoughts on or are not from Steam will be left on my userpage, the rest will have links below to their Steam reviews. I don't see any reason writing something people will not read. If anyone has been interested in my game reviews, then you'll be happy to know that I haven't removed them.
